The Bible on Engaged Leadership

The Bible is a treasure trove of wisdom when it comes to the topic of leadership. It offers a variety of verses that are rich in insights and guidance, a few of which stand head and shoulders above the rest in terms of importance and depth. One of the best of these is found in the book of Proverbs, chapter 11 verse 14: “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”

This simple but powerful saying speaks to the core values of good leadership. It is a reminder that no person is capable of leading alone. Leadership is a shared endeavor. A leader is only as strong as their team, and every team needs a balance of different talents and voices to ensure its success. The verse thus emphasizes the need for collaboration, of fostering a space in which ideas and advice can be exchanged without fear of retribution.

The Bible also draws attention to the value of wisdom when it comes to leadership. The verse in Proverbs 11:14 reinforces the notion that collective guidance is the key to a successful team, but it directs us to look for the wise counselors in order to tap into the best of their advice. A leader who lacks wisdom will find it difficult to make sound decisions, whereas one who cultivates it will be well served by their team of counselors.

The Bible encourages leaders to listen to their people and be open to their input. Proverbs 11:14 helps us to understand that there is beauty in the diversity of opinions and the collective wisdom of a group. A leader who is willing to form meaningful connections with their team members will be more successful in achieving their goals.

Finally, Proverbs 11:14 warns against over-dependence on a single strategy or individual. It reminds us that there is strength in numbers and security in plural council. A leader who relies too heavily on one opinion or perspective is likely to find themselves misguided and vulnerable.

All in all, Proverbs 11:14 is one of the Bible’s best verses on leading. It reminds us that no individual is smarter than the collective, and it calls us to the wise path of collaboration, wisdom and openness. It offers insight into the importance of respecting individual gifts and ideas, while simultaneously warning against single-minded approaches. No doubt, this is a verse which all leaders should keep close to heart and strive to apply at all times.
